Infectious Disease Control A Training Initiative for Resettlement Staff/Volunteers - Participant Manuals

This CIC training initiative was provided in response to a need identified by staff and volunteers involved in the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) and the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program.

Background

Managing health issues was a top training need identified by both CIC and SPO staff during the RAP training needs assessment conducted in 2006. In an effort to meet this need, CIC embarked on an initiative to fund the development and delivery of a national training course.

During March and April 2008, 245 resettlement staff and volunteer sponsors participated in the first ever training course funded by CIC on infectious disease control to learn about:

• supporting the health and well being of refugees with infectious diseases,
• demystifying privacy and confidentiality issues,
• ensuring the safety of refugees, staff and community from infectious diseases.

This workshop sought to provide participants with training to:

1. Share their strengths and successes in safely working with resettled refugees who are having health issues

2. Identify areas for improvement in supporting resettled refugees’ health needs

3. Develop clarity about pre-arrival health protocols for all resettled refugees

4. Understand privacy requirements pertaining to the health conditions of resettled refugees

5. Gain basic awareness of infectious disease prevention and control

6. Establish future steps to enhance the development of their own knowledge and awareness of infectious disease control.
