Methodology
Introduction
(10 minutes)
Remind participants about the lesson
on skills and personal attributes. Explain that in this lesson they
are going to build upon their work from the previous lesson. Review,
if necessary, the difference between skills and personal attributes.
Ask for some examples.
Pre-Tasks
1. (5 minutes)
Ask participants to divide into
their sub-sector groups: nurses, pharmacists, medical laboratory
technologists, midwives, physiotherapists, occupational therapists,
and respiratory therapists.
2. (15 minutes)
Give each participant a list of
the job-specific skills for their sub-sector (Handout 1 a, b, c,
d, e, f, g). Ask them to check off four or five skills that they
have developed through past work experience. Ask participants to
rate the skills from one to five, number one being the most important
and five being the least important.
3. (15 minutes)
Ask each group to think of other
job-specific skills that should be added to the list.
4. (25 minutes)
Still working in sub-sector groups,
group members should decide on the six skills the group feels are
most valuable for their profession. The skills listed on the handout
and any other skills suggested by group members should be incorporated
into the list. The list should be written on chart paper and presented
to the whole class. Ask participants to explain their choices.
5. (20 minutes)
Distribute Handout 2 (Job Interview),
Handout 3 (Comprehension Check), and Handout 4 (Interview Analysis
Chart). After participants have read the interview, ask them to
answer the comprehension questions, recording their answers using
the Interview Analysis Chart. Take up the answers with the whole
class.
Tasks
1. (45 minutes)
Ask participants to work with a
partner to write a script for a job interview. They should draw
on their own past work experience and use Handout 2 as a model, changing
the context so it is applicable to their sub-sector. Ask participants
to incorporate the same four questions in their interviews but
to include their own personal skills and attributes and those relevant
to their sub-sector in their answers. Encourage them to use Handout
4 as a guide.
2. (20 minutes)
Ask for volunteers to role-play
their interview in front of the class. Discuss the interview
after it is completed. Downloads
