STIC - Health Care: Facilitator's Introduction

Introduction to the Health Care Terminology Workshop

The Health care terminology workshop begins with five lessons in the workplace module, followed by three lessons in the work search module. The workshop concludes with two lessons focusing on licensing in the final module. Each module and each topic are self-contained, but together they form a comprehensive program for occupation-specific second language learning.

Module 1: Communication and Terminology for the Workplace

This module begins with a general lesson introducing medical terminology. Participants will be able to develop strategies for understanding terminology which can subsequently be applied to the tasks and pre-tasks in the lessons throughout all three modules. The next four lessons are centred on three tasks common to most health care professionals: gathering patient information, describing symptoms and treatments, and giving instructions on medical procedures. Each lesson is introduced by presenting the terminology in context. The tasks are context-dependent, allowing participants to become familiar with terminology needed to communicate with other members of the health care team and with patients. Module 2: Communication and Terminology for Work Search

This module consists of three lessons. The first two lessons are interdependent. In the first lesson, participants analyze skills and attributes in health care job ads and expand their knowledge of terminology that can be used to describe their own skills and attributes. In the second lesson, participants read a job interview script and then have the opportunity to describe their own skills and personal attributes in an interview. The last lesson deals with cross-cultural issues in health care, particularly as they may be raised in a job interview situation. Participants are familiarized with problem-solving techniques that can be applied in a variety of situations.

Module 3: Communication and Terminology for Professional Registration

In this module, participants are familiarized with the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 as it applies to their own health care sub-sector. In the final lesson, Occupational Fact Sheets form the basis for reading tasks and provide opportunities for explaining and describing registration procedures for each sub-sector.

Cumulatively, the modules provide an introduction to the communication and terminology needed by internationally-trained health care professionals to perform tasks related to the workplace, work search, and licensing.
