Instructions

a)  Warm-up

Facilitator introduces self and asks each participant to introduce him/herself using the following format (see Overhead 1):

  • Name
  • Occupation
  • Expectations (what you expect to gain from the workshop)

Facilitator records participants' responses on overhead.

b) Group Discussion

Based on the information participants have given about their occupational backgrounds, facilitator leads the whole group in a discussion.

Ask each participant to elaborate on his/her:

  • training for the trade (apprenticeship?)
  • qualifications (diploma/licence/certificate?)
  • work experience

The following questions might help stimulate the discussion:

  • Describe the apprenticeship/skilled trades system in the country you came from.
  • What do you know about the apprenticeship/skilled trades system in Ontario?
  • What steps have you taken to get back into the trade?
  • In Ontario automotive service technician is a certified trade. What does that mean?
